I am a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), with over fifteen years experience in the mental health field , specializing in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, addictions, chronic pain and relationship dynamics. As an integrative therapist I utilize both scientific, evidence based therapies such as Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), along with the holistic mind-body therapies of Gestalt Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnosis and Mindfulness. I draw upon the best aspects of these therapies in order to provide a comprehensive treatment plan that will allow you to resolve distressing symptoms and heal from root causes of issues. I provide a safe, supportive and empathetic environment where you can share your thoughts and feelings openly.
I believe healing is possible when we open ourselves to accepting fundamentally who we are as persons at a deeper level. When this occurs there is no longer a need to search compulsively for acceptance outside of oneself. Learning to accept all parts of the Self, even parts that have been rejected or disowned, stops the enslaving need for approval. I support my clients to embrace their emotions authentically, to be present compassionately with parts of self that have been injured and hurt, and to rise above obstacles with courage. The primary guiding principle in my work with clients is from Gestalt Therapy and “The Paradoxical Theory of Change,” which teaches, “the more a person accepts themselves the healthier they become.”
Part of becoming a healthier person, I believe, is to identify and change negative ”thinking, feeling, and behaving” patterns creating unhappiness and havoc in the psyche. These patterns are often subconscious re-enactments, primarily from childhood, which served to protect the child from painful emotions of shame, guilt, blame and fear. I help my clients to understand the origins of their negative patterns keeping them stuck, change the subconscious programming keeping up the dysfunction, and to aid the body to safely release stored up pain. The consequence of not changing these patters is alienation from the Authentic Self. Chanigng old patters creates a path for improved mental and physical health, satisfying relationships, and better direction in life.
