Adriana has a comprehensive knowledge of neurobiology of trauma and is passionate in working with complex trauma cases and attachment disruptions. Her training in developmental, childhood trauma and attachment has assisted her in helping clients target the dandelion root of landing in unhealthy relationship patterns (Schwartz,2016 ) . This includes the urge to attach, and other self-harming behaviours that prevent individuals from building self-acceptance to support personal growth and achieve a joyful existence. Adriana is a compassionate and energetic counsellor determined to empower women after an intimate partner domestic violence and abuse.
Exposure to trauma interferes with neuro/sensorial functioning (Van Der Kolk). This creates survival defenses or accommodating mechanisms (viewed as ego states) in many cases starting in childhood which places them into “fight, flight, freeze, dissociative and submissive responses”, thereby avoiding dealing with the emotions of fear, rage, grief, panic, guilt and shame that is carried to adulthood (Corrigan, 2018). Survivors of trauma settle for unhealthy life styles and physical ailments and overall emotional exhaustion before seeking counselling. Consequently, this affects their relationships and perpetuates trauma through generations.
While seeking counselling can be overwhelming to begin with, as the process starts to unfold, clients may undertake their personal growth. Each session provides an opportunity for self-exploration and on-going access to conscious awareness states. The therapeutic approach used in trauma processing aims to take review of the unhealthy patterns that have interrupted the client’s original life purpose and path. The overall goal of the trauma processing experience is to restore the sense of self, inhabit the body, establish new life goals and build skills to become resilient to life’s on-going challenges.
